Eerder metaal 'Blade Saver' for L type rear mudguard and roller axle replacement
Note: Does not fit the new round profile mudguards from the P and T line bikes.
After many requests we finally have new stock and an easier production method for the Blade Saver for Brompton L type rear mudguards. The holes are now very precisely drilled in a jig, so no inaccuracies possible.
The purpose of this brace is to prevent cracking of the mudguard blade. In case you never experienced this, it's caused by the weight of the rear wheel being absorbed by the stays and the blade each time you fold your Brompton. Finally after a lot of folding and maybe on a cold day rushing to the train it suddenly hates you and might explode...but not with the brace :-)
Material: matt silver anodised aluminium 15mm wide and 2 mm thick
Weight: 27 grams
Note: the black version shows some brownish discoloration in the area where the 80 degrees bent is, this is caused by the annealing proces neaded before bending. This parts will disappear under the rear brake caliper, so will be hardly visible. The photos of the black Bladesaver show the previous powdercoated version.
Assembly instructions:
Best to remove the rear wheel before assembly. At least deflate the tyre, but even than it's quite fiddly to add the plates and little nuts on the underside so best is to remove the wheel. Remove all the bolts which hold the stays and the roller. Try to not lose the nuts. Release the brake cable from the caliper, unscrew the Lower Stop Disc and move the brake caliper to the back with the mudguard still on the caliper axle. Add the Blade Saver, the concave-flat alu washer and push the brake caliper axle through the rear frame/brake bridge again. Add all three washers and tighten the Lower Stop Disc fairly tight, but don't squeeze the brake bridge tube. Screw in the supplied longer M4x12 bolts. First at the vertical stay and and next the roller bolts. Screwing them through the Blade Saver plus the blade might be easier than just pushing them through as both parts might not align perfectly. For adding the roller bolts it might be necessary to use a pick or other thin/sharp tool through the hole at the end to align the hole in the roller with the hole in the blade. Push or screw the bolt through the other hole, than finish off with the last bolt where the pick was.
Good luck and enjoy your rides!
